Pittsburgh jobs have traditionally come from heavy industry, but in the 21st century the Steel City has added a plethora of jobs in the technology and finance sectors. Several Fortune 500 companies call this city home, including PPG Industries, The Kraft Heinz Company, WESCO International and Dicks Sporting Goods. The unemployment rate in Pittsburgh is 4.7 percent, slightly higher than the national average.

Where to Look for Pittsburgh Jobs

One of the fastest growing sectors of the Pittsburgh economy is the technology sector. In fact, the tech sector in Pittsburgh is responsible for more than 40,000 jobs. Major tech companies in Allegheny County include Allegheny Technologies and Thermo Fischer Scientific.

Healthcare is a leading part of the Pittsburgh economy. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is the city's largest employer. In addition, Allegheny Health Network and Highmark health insurance company are among the city's top 10 employers.

Heavy Industry Is Still a Major Employer

Pittsburgh's roots are in manufacturing, with many plants still lining the three rivers that converge in downtown. Although the city's economic base has diversified, manufacturing still plays a major role. US Steel, Alcoa and Arconic are among the leading sources of manufacturing jobs in the greater Pittsburgh area.

Banking has become an increasingly large part of the Pittsburgh economy in the 21st century. Among the city's top 10 employers are PNC Financial Services and Bank of New York Mellon. There is also a branch of the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank inU.S. government, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and local governments are all major Pittsburgh employers. The federal government employs more than 18,000 workers here, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania employs around 16,500.

Universities and Public Schools

The greater Pittsburgh area is home to a number of colleges and universities. Area colleges and universities include Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University and Chatham University. Pittsburgh Public Schools, with an enrollment of around 25,000 students, is also a major employer.

While Pittsburgh grew up as an industrial city, it has been very successful in diversifying its economy. Today the Steel City offers jobs in a wide variety of industries, everything from technology to education.
